A Look into Cambrian: Blending Welsh Heritage with Modern Performance

Britain has gone through big bouts of change, but the timeless beauty of the natural landscape has always stayed the same. Materials like slate have a strong roofing history, being used to match the surrounding natural aesthetic. But for modern developers, housebuilders, and specifiers, sourcing traditional slate in high volumes while meeting modern performance, cost, and weather standards can be a challenge.
That is where BMI Redland’s reconstituted slate alternative Cambrian steps in.
If you are new to the product, Cambrian offers the ultimate compromise: it gives you the sought after premium look of natural slate but pairs it with the installation benefits of an interlocking tile. To truly understand what makes this system so unique, we are taking a closer look at Cambrian through three projects that highlight the benefits of choosing natural slate alternatives.
Preserving the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast: Maes-Y-Felin, St Davids

There is no better place to see Cambrian in its element than where its story begins: Wales.
In St Davids, developer GRD Homes is delivering the Maes-Y-Felin scheme, a tranquil 58-home development. Because it sits entirely within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the project faced intense planning scrutiny to ensure it perfectly preserved the historic character of this highly protected conservation area.
The solution was Cambrian Slate. Formed from moulds taken directly from natural slates, Cambrian features an authentic riven surface and thin leading edge. Cambrian is actually manufactured in Wales using over 60% reconstituted natural Ffestiniog slate waste that would otherwise go to landfill.
Beyond passing strict local planning with its design, Cambrian solved a major geographical challenge. Sitting in an exposed coastal area, the roofs had to withstand harsh weather. Because Cambrian is a mechanically fixed, interlocking system, its advanced three-point fixing ensures resistance to wind uplift, keeping the homes safe, secure, and beautiful for generations.
Revitalising a century of history: Shireland Collegiate Academy

Cambrian’s ability to mimic traditional Welsh slate isn’t just popular in coastal villages; it is also well-suited for renovating historic buildings.
At Shireland Collegiate Academy in the West Midlands, the main school building dates all the way back to 1907. After serving the school community for over a century, the original slates had severely deteriorated, resulting in water ingress. The replacement roof needed to sensitively match the building's historic charm while maximising the school's long-term investment. The resulting re-roofing project was complex, featuring 10 steeply pitched roofs of varying sizes, lead valleys, and a notable bell tower. Specialist contractors utilised Cambrian Slate to replace 1,360m² of roofing.
By choosing Cambrian, the project achieved a sympathetic replacement that honoured the 1907 aesthetic. Furthermore, because Cambrian was manufactured just 100 miles away in Wales using recycled content, it delivered significant carbon savings compared to importing natural alternatives from overseas.
Solving sourcing and structural struggles: Houndsfield Primary School

Houndsfield Primary School, faced with an ageing roof was causing severe water ingress and structural dampness.
The school needed a complete roof replacement, but sourcing traditional Welsh slate proved incredibly difficult due to a combination of high market demand and limited material supply. This threatened both the project's timeline and its budget.
By specifying Cambrian Slate, the project team bypassed the supply shortages entirely. Cambrian was readily available, cost-effective, and provided the exact premium slate aesthetic required by the local authority.
The project also highlighted Cambrian’s engineering flexibility. The school's original architecture featured "sprocketed eaves"; a traditional design element where the pitch of the roof shifts dramatically by 10 to 15 degrees over the lower courses. The roofing team was able to easily adapt the interlocking Cambrian tiles around the heritage detailing. Backed by our free SpecMaster service, the school now benefits from a traditional appearance and a 15-year whole-roof guarantee.
The Cambrian Verdict

Whether it is battling coastal weather in a Welsh National Park, matching 1907 Edwardian architecture, or overcoming modern material supply chains, Cambrian Slate delivers.
By taking real Welsh slate waste and re-engineering it for the 21st century, Cambrian doesn't force you to choose between the premium aesthetics that drive planning approval and the speed, security, and predictability of modern construction methods.
